Our customers are increasingly becoming more conscious of their carbon footprint (especially in Norway where we love the environment) and that's a great thing! So this dashboard was created to give our customers some insight into their Azure footprint.
It’s not exactly the sort of dashboard that you look at and immediately think, oh we can cut costs here, but it is heavily correlated to good resource management and by extension, cost. By displaying carbon consumption as a KPI and showing its increases and decreases we see a different measure of the results of our downscaling, cutting, or having autoscaling enabled.
At a glance you can see this month’s CO2 emissions alongside last month’s, and you can also see carbon emissions by service type. It’s clear immediately that we use a lot of Service Bus, Storage and Azure App Service. And the percentage change from last month is helpful to see from my cost-cutting team’s perspective. It’s helpful for customers to be able to quickly see if things are going in the right direction.
You can also see carbon footprint by resource group and subscription. Plus some fun layman examples – such as number of smartphone charges and km of flight – of what your carbon emission numbers actually translate into
These visualizations were created from data provided by Microsoft Azure’s Sustainability APIs, released in early 2024.
