Octopus household energy dashboard

I created this dashboard using SquaredUp’s Octopus Energy plugin to supplement the official Octopus customer dashboard for domestic energy usage, as there were certain metrics that could not be surfaced in the official dashboard.

Challenge

While the official dashboard is able to display electricity and gas usage over time by day, week, month or year, it is impossible to view consumption per hour. This was important to me as I wanted a more granular view of consumption trends over the course of the day.

It is also impossible to view gas and electricity consumption in relation to one another in Octopus’ native customer dashboard. The dashboard also couldn’t show any sort of custom aggregated data.

Solution

I created my own dashboard using SquaredUp and the WebAPI plugin to get oversight of the metrics that weren't available in the official Octopus dashboard.

On the whole, this dashboard provides the flexibility that I found lacking in the Octopus customer dashboard. It’s helped me better aggregate and map trends around my consumption data. It’s also provided the more granular view I was after.

Dashboard walk-through

Hourly Electricity and Gas consumption over 7 days

The first graph I created was a line graph displaying hourly electricity and gas consumption. It provided me the granular view I needed to understand consumption trends over the course of a day.

Median Units consumed ph

I also created a gauge to display median units consumed per hour, with 2 units as the threshold. This helps me stay aware of my consumption and how it aligns with my budget.

Total units over 7 days

With this donut chart, I am able to see how my gas and electricity consumption relate to one another.

Total cost for 7 days in £

With this final visualization, I can see exactly how much my electricity and gas has cost me in pounds, over the last 7 days.
